Teleprompting again in Philadelphia!
I love my job! I was the Teleprompter Operator charged with accompanying a client in and around Philadelphia’s many museums – paramount among them – The Barnes Foundation. We didn’t have total access to the interior, but we did visit all exhibit spaces and took copious notes.
The Barnes Foundation houses by far the most impressive collection of impressionist, post impressionist and early modern paintings in the world. I have never seen so many works by a particular artist in one place! Renoir, Picasso, Cézanne, Soutine, van Gogh among others.
Also incredibly impressive is the African art he amassed between 1912 and 1951.
His taste in art extends to other items he collected: Decorative and industrial items from diverse cultures and eras, American paintings, Native American ceramics, jewelry, textiles, ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman art, etc., etc. Another striking aspect is the way he arranged and rearranged his collections. The wall compositions are organized according to his perception of the aesthetic connections between the works. Light, color, line and space are more important than style or genre. In any given room he demonstrates this by the eclectic nature of the paintings and the manner in which he exhibits the objects on the wall.
Sorry, I seem to have lectured rather than simply tell you about my job as Teleprompter Operator . We used the battery-powered device, given that we were mostly outside and had no power supply.
The client has rented from Teleprompter Rental in New York City on several occasions.
I volunteered for this gig when I heard what the job entailed. It all worked well. The client was happy and I “got some culture”.
I’m reminded of Paul Simon’s lyrics:
… I knew a man, his brain was so small
He couldn’t think of nothing at all
Not the same as you and me
He doesn’t dig poetry
He’s so unhip that when you say Dylan
He thinks you’re talking about Dylan Thomas
Whoever he was
The man ain’t got no culture…
Well, I got me some!
Loved the whole experience. I didn’t even mind driving out. For those of you who might need to rent a Teleprompter – do remember that The American Movie Company and its subsidiary, Teleprompter Rental service many cities outside of Manhattan.
